چکیده

We give an improved algorithm for calculating the exact null distribution of the two sample Mann Whitney Wilcoxon rank sum statistic. The algorithm modifies the update method of Smid using a minimal linked list which directs calculation of only those intermediate probabilities required for the final value. Using an efficient shortened representation of the list of required intermediate values, exact probabilities for sample sizes of the order of 100 for each of the two samples can be computed on a personal computer for cases covering the range from many ties with few different values to few ties with many different values.

Nonparametric Tests of Differences in Medians: Comparison of the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney and Robust Rank–Order Tests

The nonparametric Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test is commonly used by experimental economists for detecting differences in central tendency between two samples. This test is only theoretically appropriate under certain assumptions concerning the population distributions from which the samples are drawn, and is often used in cases where it is unclear whether these assumptions hold, and even when they...

A data-adaptive methodology for finding an optimal weighted generalized Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon statistic

Xie and Priebe [2002. “Generalizing the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon Statistic”. J. Nonparametric Statist. 12, 661–682] introduced the class of weighted generalized Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon (WGMWW) statistics which contained as special cases the classical Mann–Whitney test statistic and many other nonparametric distribution-free test statistics commonly used for the two-sample testing problem. The two-sa...

Statistical Analysis of Hippocampus Shape Using a Modified Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon Test

The Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon (MWW) test statistic, while distribution-free, suffers from a loss of efficacy for certain underlying distributions. In this manuscript, we instead use a data-adaptive weighted generalized Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon (AWGMWW) test statistic, one that is optimal in the Pitman Asymptotic Efficacy (PAE) sense, to discern differences in hippocampus shape among twin populations w...

Exploiting the Link Between the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Test and a Simple Odds Statistic

Over a quarter-century ago, Alan Agresti (Biometrics, 1980) proposed using the generalized odds ratio (genOR) to summarize the association between two ordinal variables. Unfortunately, genOR is still largely unknown, even though it is elegantly straightforward and fills key voids in the working statistician’s toolbox. An extension of it, a statistic we are calling “WMWodds,” is an ideal effect-...

A uniform saddlepoint expansion for the null-distribution of the Wilcoxon- Mann-Whitney statistic

The authors give the exact coefficient of 1/N in a saddlepoint approximation to the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney null-distribution. This saddlepoint approximation is obtained from an Edgeworth approximation to the exponentially tilted distribution. Moreover, the rate of convergence of the relative error is uniformly of order O(1/N) in a large deviation interval as defined in Feller (1971). The propose...
